Former Georgetown Raiders forward Evan Rodrigues (photo credit - Steve McLaughlin/BU Athletics), now with the Boston University Terriers, was named Hockey East Player of the Week recently after his play this past weekend.
The native of Etobicoke, Ontario played two full OJHL seasons as a member of the Georgetown Raiders from 2009-11. Entering the league as a 16-year old in 2009-10, Rodrigues tasted immediate success, notching 20 goals and 51 points as a rookie, while earning a spot on Team East as they won the 2010 CJHL Prospect Game series played in Dauphin, Manitoba, 9-2 over Team West. By year two, the top-end talent was one of the Raiders offensive leaders, finishing the year with 21 goals and 54 points, while also earning a spot as a member of Team Canada East at the 2010 World Junior 'A' Challenge held in Penticton, B.C. Rodrigues would take his game to another level, helping Canada East capture the silver medal, while leading the tournament in scoring with three goals and seven points to earn Tournament All-Star honours. His play throughout the season, not only earned him North-West Conference 1st Team All-Prospect honours, but ultimately his scholarship opportunity to join Boston University.
Below is the official press release from the Boston University Athletics website (www.goterriers.com):
After helping the Boston University men's ice hockey team claim its first Frozen Four berth in six years, senior Evan Rodrigues has been named the Hockey East Warrior Player of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Rodrigues was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Northeast Regional after leading the Terriers to a pair of one-goal wins. He notched four points (3g, 1a) on the weekend, highlighted by the game-winning goal in the regional final against Minnesota Duluth.
He scored twice against Duluth after registering a goal and an assist in Friday's NCAA opener against Yale. The assist came on junior Danny O'Regan's overtime winner.
The Terriers won both games by a score of 3-2 and will next face North Dakota in the Frozen Four semifinals on Thursday, April 9, at TD Garden.
Rodrigues' first goal on Saturday was his 60th point of the season and he ranks second in the nation in points now with 61, trailing only freshman linemate Jack Eichel (67).
