The OJHL announced today that Vaughan Vipers forward Travis Fulton (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL) has been named the Gongshow Gear South-East Conference Player-of-the-Month after recording 16 points in 7 games played throughout the month of December.

The second-year forward’s career-best month included seven goals and nine assists, while helping the Vipers to a record of 5-2. After starting the month scoreless during a shootout victory over division rival St. Michael’s, Fulton set-off on a six game point streak that saw him record 16 points. Included during the stretch was a four point outing during another division victory over Mississauga, as well as his first OJHL hat trick and career-best six point effort during a win over Pickering. The speedster currently leads or is tied for the lead on the Vipers in goals, assists, points, power play goals (10), shorthanded assists (2) and game-winning goals (4). Fulton’s 10 power play goals place him tied for fifth overall in the league, while his 29 assists are the eighth best total overall.

Fulton described his feelings upon hearing of the award, “It's really an honour to be recognized by the OJHL for my play in the month of December. We had some big wins this month and I couldn't be happier being a part of everything that's going on here with the Vipers.” He continued by discussing the season thus far, “I'm really happy with how everything has developed with Vaughan this season. We have a great coaching staff and a solid group of guys on the team which makes coming to the rink and performing my best really easy."

Vipers General Manager and Head Coach Jason Fortier discussed the importance of his star forward, “Travis is a very fast player with an excellent work ethic. He leads by example on and off the ice and has been a key player for us and our team has shown much improvement since the start of the season. Our last 18 games, we are 13 wins and 5 losses.”

Mark Cooper of the St. Michael’s Buzzers was runner-up to Fulton as the South-East Conference Player-of-the-Month. The second-year native of Scarborough, Ontario notched 16 points in 10 games played for the Buzzers throughout the month of December.

A native of Oakville, Ontario, Travis Fulton was born on October 24, 1992 and his father’s job would see him move frequently as a youngster, spending time in Mississauga, Chicago, Michigan, Etobicoke and New Jersey, before heading back to Oakville for his Midget ‘AAA’ season.

After playing only Bantam ‘A’ hockey while in New Jersey, he quickly realized he could make something out of hockey upon returning to his roots in Oakville and took his game to the next level within the prestigious Oakville Rangers program. Ultimately Fulton ended his minor hockey career by helping the Rangers captured the 2009-10 OMHA Midget ‘AAA’ Championship, finishing second on the club in scoring during the tournament with six points.

Fulton made the jump to junior hockey last season as a member of the Georgetown Raiders. Despite his smaller stature, listed at 5’9”, 170 lbs., the 18-year old rookie instantly tasted success in the OJHL, recording 34 points in 44 regular season games played on a veteran-laden squad, and another four points in five playoff games. In April, he was selected by former Atlanta Thrashers head coach John Anderson to compete as a member of Canada’s (comprised of OJHL players) Under-20 Three Nations Cup squad that competed in Finland and, despite failing to win a game, the experience and competitiveness was not lost on the diminutive forward.

After only two games this season, Fulton was moved to the Vipers, and he immediately made an impact with his new squad, recording his first goal just over three minutes into his first game with the club while playing on the Vipers first line. With a commitment to leadership for the club’s younger players, a tremendous work ethic, and outstanding skill-set, he hopes to continue his hockey career at the collegiate level once his OJHL career is finished.
