GREG WALTERS NAMED CJHL COACH OF THE YEAR
The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Greg Walters of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Georgetown Raiders has been named its Coach of the Year Award recipient for the 2016-17 campaign, in voting determined through each of the 10 leagues that comprise the 132-team CJHL.
Having completed his seventh season behind the Georgetown bench, Walters led the Raiders to the best record in the 22-team OJHL with an impressive 45-5-2-2 mark through the course of the campaign.
His efforts aided his club in claiming their first-ever league regular season crown with Georgetown’s .870 winning percentage and 94 points both being new franchise records.
The Raiders were the most dominant team in the OJHL as the home side in 2016-17, losing only once in regulation as they went 26-1-1-0. They also posted the second-best record as the visiting club at 19-4-1-2.
Walters’ efforts helped him earn 2016-17 OJHL Coach of the Year laurels as well.
That was his second league top coach honour, having previously won back in 2011-12. He was also runner-up for the accolades last season.
In the seven years and 369 regular season contests Walters has been head coach and general manager of the Raiders, Georgetown has won a notable 256 times.
The CJHL would also like to recognize the four other finalists for its Coach of the Year Award in 2016-17.
