FORMER OJHL ALL-STAR CAMERON WRIGHT WINS NCAA DI CHAMPIONSHIP

Former Ontario Junior Hockey League all-star Cameron Wright is an NCAA Division I champion.

The Newmarket native and his University of Denver Pioneer teammates defeated Minnesota State 5-1 in Boston Saturday night to win the school’s record-tying ninth NCAA hockey championship.

Wright, who played four seasons at Bowling Green before transferring to Denver this year, had an assist and scored an empty-net goal to help seal the win.

Wright played three seasons (2014-17) with the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the OJHL scoring 63 goals and adding 67 assists in 136 games. He was named to the league’s Second All-Star Team in his final season.

The championship game matched the top two offensive teams in the nation, but from the moment Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask dropped the ceremonial first puck, the emphasis was on defense.

Minnesota State (38-6) took a 1-0 lead first-period goal and dominated — outshooting Denver 18-8 in the first 40 minutes. That was still the only goal until there were five minutes gone in the third, when Minnesota State tied it.

The Pioneers would take the lead and never look back.
