The OJHL announced today that St. Michael’s Buzzers captain Patrick McCarron (photo credit - Mike Ivall/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month for October after leading all OJHL defencemen with 13 points throughout the month.

The 18-year old defenceman was a pillar of consistency this month, notching five goals and thirteen points in 11 games played during the month to finish tied for the second best total among all players in the South Division.  McCarron recorded points in nine of the eleven games he played and entered the Team Canada East Selection Camp on a six game point streak, while helping St. Michael’s to first place in the South Division standings.  The undisputed leader among Buzzer players, his poise with the puck has made McCarron one of the club’s go-to guys, especially on the power play, where he recorded five power play assists and seven power play points during the month.  Three times during the month, the rearguard recorded multi-point games, including a three point effort during a 4-1 victory over Georgetown before camp.  McCarron is currently the only defenceman to sit in the top 25 of overall OJHL scoring with 22 points and his 11 power play helpers is tied for third best overall.

“It is an extreme honour to be named the South-West Player-of-the-Month,” said McCarron.  “There are a lot of great players in this conference and in this league, and it truly is an honour to win the award.  We had a great month as a group and I would like to thank my Buzzers teammates for playing a part in the award, as well as Coach Ricci for giving me the opportunities that he has thus far.  Once I’m back at St. Mike’s, I look forward to getting back to work and helping the club to a Division title and then making some noise in the playoffs.

Buzzers General Manager and Head Coach Rich Ricci discussed his captain’s importance to the club, “Patty is this season’s Buzzers captain and has displayed tremendous off and on-ice leadership.  A late bloomer, Patty is currently a premier defenceman in the OJHL, leading in goals, assists and points.  Patty has made a great case for re-entry for the 2013 NHL draft and I believe he will be a standout at Cornell.  I also believe he has a promising pro career ahead.”

Brendan Woods of the Georgetown Raiders was runner-up to McCarron as the OJHL South-West Conference Player-of-the-Month.  Woods led the West Division during the month of October with eight goals, including three shorthanded, while recording 13 points in his 10 games played.

Born on August 13, 1994, the now 6’3”, 195 lbs. native of Etobicoke, Ontario began his minor hockey career with the Humber Valley Sharks ‘AA’ program.  McCarron would taste success early in his career winning a North American Silver Stick, GTHL and OHF All-Ontario ‘AA’ titles all during his atom years.

That success pushed the lanky rearguard into the ‘AAA’ ranks, joining the prestigious Toronto Marlboros program in minor peewee and remaining with them through his minor midget season.  McCarron was a big part of the club’s success along the way; helping the Marlies win another All-Ontario championship in bantam, while posting impressive numbers in minor midget of 26 points in 73 games played.  His play would see the Oshawa Generals draft him in the 8th round of the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.

Attending St. Michael’s College School, McCarron joined another famous hockey organization, the St. Michael’s Buzzers, as a 16-year old in 2010-11.  A tough task for even a veteran defenceman, he would hold his own among the older players and used the experience to become a leader on the Buzzers’ backend last year.  McCarron would record 27 points in 43 games, helping lead the Buzzers to a South Division regular season title.  Along the way, he was put on the NHL Central Scouting Watch list for the NHL Draft, was a member of Team East at the 2011 CJHL Prospect Game series, was a member of Team South at the 2011 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge, was named an OJHL 2nd Team All-Prospect and committed to join the Cornell University Big Red on an NCAA Division I scholarship beginning in 2013.

This season McCarron was named the Buzzers captain and not only does he lead all OJHL defencemen in scoring with 22 points in 20 games played, but he also sits tied for 14th overall in league scoring.  His totals include 16 assists, tied for fifth best in the entire league and he also has two game-winning goals.
