The OJHL announced today that Aurora Tigers forward Robert Angiolella (photo credit - Tim Bates/OJHL Images) has been named the Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month for January after scoring 12 goals in only nine games played during the month.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario native had the most productive month of his three-year OJHL career, also adding a single assist for 13 points, while his 12 goals accounted for 32% of the club’s total output in January. The Tigers leading scorer with 22 goals on the season, Angiolella’s month included a six game goal scoring streak that saw him notch 11 of the 12 goals, including a career-high four goal effort during a 5-2 victory over Whitby on January 8, as well as two game-winning goals to help the club remain in the hunt for first place in the North Division standings with a 6-2-1 record. During five of the nine games, Angiolella was named one of the game’s stars, earning third star honours twice and the first star of the game on three occasions.

“It is truly an honour to be recognized as the North-East Player-of-the-Month,” said the Tigers star forward upon hearing of the award. “I am extremely grateful for this award and I would like to thank my teammates, my coaching staff and the entire Aurora Tigers organization. I feel privileged to have a talented team surrounding me and a coaching staff, especially Coach Richmond, for supporting and believing in me from the start. Our goal is to finish at the top of the North Division and ultimately to win the RBC Cup this year.”

"As the Head Coach of the Aurora Tigers, I can tell you that Robert Angiolella has done everything and that much more on and off the ice for his team,” added Tigers bench boss James Richmond. “Robert plays against the best players every night and consistently puts up real good offensive numbers. He takes big face-offs for us, kills penalties for us, plays a big role on our power play and has been a huge reason for us being at or near the top of the tough North Division all year long. We are very proud of Robert for winning the January POM in the OJHL.”

Craig Campbell of the Wellington Dukes, who was named the November winner, was named runner-up to Angiolella as the OJHL North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month. Campbell returned from injury to record six goals and 12 points in eight January games played, helping the Dukes solidify their playoff position.

Born on February 28, 1993, Robert Angiolella grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario and would play for numerous ‘AAA’ organizations during his minor hockey career, including the South Central Coyotes, Toronto Marlboros, Mississauga Senators and Vaughan Kings.

Angiolella’s teams often tasted success and gain valuable experience during high profile events and tournaments. As a bantam with the Senators in 2007-08, his club would win the prestigious Big Nickel Tournament held annually in Sudbury, Ontario and the following year as a minor midget, the Senators would compete in the annual OHL Cup. Undrafted in the OHL, the speedy, offensive forward took his game to nearby Vaughan for his midget season in 2009-10, where they would host the OHF TELUS Regional Midget Championship. Also during that season, Angiolella would get his first taste of junior hockey, recording two assists during an eight game stint as an affiliated player for the Vaughan Vipers. Off the ice, as a member of the St. Theresa of Lisieux boys’ soccer team, he would capture the 2010 OFSAA Boys ‘AAA’ Soccer gold medal.

Making the jump to the OJHL full-time in 2010-11 with the Markham Waxers, Angiolella would record six goals and 13 points in 22 games played, while also getting his first taste of playoff action with the club. By last season, he was one of the club’s veteran leaders and nearly tripled his offensive output, notching 16 goals and 34 points in 36 games played with the Waxers to finish seventh in scoring on the club.

With the Waxers disbanding this past summer, Angiolella was picked up by the Aurora Tigers and has not disappointed during his first year with the team, currently leading the Tigers with 22 goals, while also sitting fourth in scoring with 38 points in 39 games played. A key member of the club’s special team units, he is tied for the team lead with both six power play goals and four game-winners. Along the North-East Player-of-the-Month Award, Angiolella’s efforts also earned him a spot on the OJHL North Division All-Star Team, recording two points in four games during the 2012 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Wellington, Ontario in December. Most recently he also confirmed a full scholarship to join the Niagara University Purple Eagles NCAA Division I program, beginning in the fall of 2014.
