The OJHL announced today that Trenton Golden Hawks forward Shawn Hulshof has been named the Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month for February after tying for the Conference lead in scoring with 13 points in nine games played,
The second year Stouffville, Ontario native would miss some games early in the season due to a knee injury suffered during Team Canada East camp, but would consistently get stronger as the season progressed, finishing fourth on the Golden Hawks in scoring with 45 points in 52 games played.. Hulshof, who also tied for the team lead with 25 goals and notched four game-winning goals for the regular season champions, tied for the North-East Conference scoring lead in February on the strength of 7 goals and 13 points, including five power play points and would score the 3-2 game-winner during a Divisional match versus Whitby. "It is a true honour to be selected North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month, chosen amongst so many good players in this OJHL Conference," said the 19-year old Hulshof. "I'd like to thank the league, the Trenton Golden Hawks and in particular my teammates for making this possible."
"Shawn has been instrumental in the success of the Golden Hawks this year because he is a big power forward who can play in any and all situations," said Trenton Golden Hawks general manager and head coach Jerome Dupont. "He goes about his business quietly, but really leads with his 'A' game, wants to learn, and is the consummate team player."
Daniel Leavens of the Newmarket Hurricanes was named runner-up to Hulshof as the OJHL North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month. Leavens tied Hulshof for the Conference lead in scoring with 13 points on the strength of seven goals and six assists, including three different three point outings.
Born on June 4, 1993, Shawn Hulshof grew up in Stouffville, Ontario and would play much of his minor hockey there before playing for the 'AAA' South Central Coyotes organization and ultimately finding his way to play 'AAA' hockey in Markham.
Hulshof would play his midget hockey in Markham, beginning in 2008-09 with the Markham Majors minor midget club. One of the team's top players throughout the season, Hulshof would be selected by the Guelph Storm in the 12th round, 231st overall, of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. After sitting out a year of minor hockey due to a release dispute, Hulshof ultimately joined the Markham Waxers program for his final season of midget in 2010-11. His minor hockey career culminated at the 2011 Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) Championship held in Newmarket, Ontario. Although the Waxers would fail to win, Hulshof impressed many in attendance, tying for second in scoring at the event with five points.
Throughout his bantam and midget seasons, Hulshof would also suit up for his high school hockey teams with the St. Brother André Catholic High School Cardinals at both the junior and senior level. His high school career would also reach the pinnacle during the 2010-11 season as the Cardinals went on to win their first senior boys OFSAA gold medal since 1999-00. Hulshof was instrumental in leading Brother Andre to first the York Region Athletic Association title with a 4-0 victory over the St. Elizabeth Panthers in the championship game, and then the OFSAA AAA/AAAA title at the MasterCard Centre for Excellence in Etobicoke, Ontario with a 6-2 victory over Loyola from Mississauga. Immediately following the victory, Hulshof would be named Toronto's CITY TV Athlete of the Week for his impressive performance.
Taking notice of the talented forward's impressive play, the Trenton Golden Hawks picked up Hulshof and the 18-year old rookie made his OJHL debut in 2011-12. Playing on a veteran-laden squad, Hulshof would leave his mark, finishing sixth in scoring on the Hawks with 18 goals and 44 points in 47 games played to help Trenton finish in first place in the East Division standings. He would add another three points as the Golden Hawks were upset by Kingston in the playoffs.
Hulshof's tremendous regular season in 2012-13 earned him a spot on the OJHL East Division All-Star Team that would win the 2012 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Wellington, Ontario. He would record a single assist during the tourney en route to a shootout victory over the CCHL Yzerman Division All-Stars in the championship game.
